By producing D.Q. Don Quixote in Barcelona and programming it to start the 2000-2001 season, the Gran Teatre del Liceu of Barcelona opts for two things: a contemporary opera and the theatrical talent of La Fura dels Baus. The Liceu is obliged to both widening the aesthetical frontiers of opera and incorporating in its productions the talent of the best professionals of the country. Luckily. The result has associated –as does the novel by Cervantes– the name of Quixote with that of Barcelona, the name of the Liceu with that of La Fura dels Baus, and has made possible not only a world premiere but also a new way of understanding opera –an opera generated by theatre, which has a determining visual force. To the benefit of its future.
When doing a new reading of Don Quixote for the year 2000, the first thing that comes to our mind is that, probably, the digital era will drag books into the museum, chivalry novels along with all other books. Our proposal, divided in three acts, starts with this question: Does anyone know what a book is? After four hundred years, Don Quixote returns to Barcelona to face up to reality.
Act I. Geneva, conference room in a glass building on the banks of Lake Geneva. Year 3014. Our Quixote invents another reality: he mixes up a Swiss Bank with the cave of Montesinos.
Act II. Hong Kong. Forest-garden in the penthouse of a skyscraper, property of the Trifaldi twins. Year 3016. Here, the other people introduce him to virtual reality.
Act III. Barcelona, Congress in honor of Don Quixote. Year 2005. Quixote and Sancho Panza are devoured by the very reality of the events that take place in the Barcelona of the year 2005.
This job was not easy, we needed to synthesize all of that universe, transferring the reading of Don Quixote into a futurist wardrobe divided into three acts, each one with it’s own identity. New techniques of confections and production were developed because we had to created unique models with a large visual imagery and that could work for different sizes. We work with textiles that caught and emitted light. This project lasted approximately 9 months. We counted on the collaboration of Vasava Artworks, Leila Méndez, Fernando Gutiérrez and Ipsum Planet to create 4 different outfits. In total we designed more than 300 different outfits.
